Pastor's Corner - 8/12

Jesus was told about two tragic events. Some Galileans had been killed by Pilate while they were offering sacrifices, and eighteen people had died when the tower of Siloam collapsed. Like many people today, those listening to Jesus wanted an explanation. Were these people worse sinners than everyone else?

Jesus surprised them by redirecting the conversation. Rather than explaining why these tragedies happened, He called his listeners to examine their own hearts. “I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish” (Luke 13:3). Tragedy is not proof that someone is more sinful than others. Instead, it reminds us that life is fragile and that none of us knows what tomorrow will bring.

Jesus then told the parable of the barren fig tree. Although the tree deserved to be cut down, the gardener asked for more time. It is a beautiful picture of God's patience. Every new day is another reminder of his mercy. Yet his patience should never lead us to complacency. It is meant to lead us to repentance.

Dear Church, do not mistake God's patience for his approval of sin. Thank him for his mercy, repent today, and trust in Christ while his gracious invitation still stands.
