Pastor's Corner - 7/8

After watching Jesus pray, one of his disciples asked, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). They had undoubtedly prayed before. As faithful Jews, prayer was already part of their lives. But there was something different about Jesus’ prayers. They flowed from an intimate relationship with the Father. The disciples longed for that same closeness.

Jesus responded by teaching them what we often call the Lord’s Prayer. Note that he begins with relationship before requests by saying, “Father…” Prayer is not merely presenting a list of needs. It is coming before our heavenly Father, who knows us, loves us, and delights to hear from us.

Jesus then encourages persistence in prayer. Through the parable of the friend at midnight, he reminds us not to lose heart when answers seem delayed. Then he gives this wonderful promise: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). Our confidence is not found in our persistence alone but in the goodness of our Father, who always gives what is best to his children.

Perhaps today you feel discouraged in prayer. Maybe you’ve been praying for someone you love, a difficult situation, or a burden that seems unchanged. Don’t give up! Your Father hears every prayer. He is wiser than we are, kinder than we can imagine, and always faithful to his promises. Continue to come to him with confidence, trusting that his timing and answers are always good.

Dear Church, don’t let disappointment keep you from prayer. Your heavenly Father invites you to come boldly into his presence. Keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking, knowing that the One who loves you is always listening.
