Fearful Saints and a Sovereign God
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
As Christians, we often say that we believe in the sovereignty of God. We affirm that God is in control, that nothing happens outside His will, and that He works all things together for our good and His glory. Yet even with these truths firmly rooted in our theology, fear can still find its way into our hearts.
Why is that?
Part of the answer is that we are still fallen people living in a fallen world. While we have been redeemed by Christ, we have not yet been glorified. We still battle weakness, uncertainty, and the limitations of our human understanding. Fear often arises when we focus on what we can see rather than on what God has promised.
The disciples experienced this. They walked with Jesus, witnessed His miracles, and heard His teaching. Yet when the storm arose on the Sea of Galilee, they were terrified.
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Mark 4:39
Their fear was real, but their fear revealed that they had forgotten who was in the boat with them.
The same is true for us. Fear grows when our circumstances appear bigger than our God. We may fear failure, rejection, sickness, financial hardship, the future, or even sharing our faith. Yet Scripture continually calls us to trust not in ourselves but in the Lord.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3
Notice that David does not say, "If I am afraid." He says, "When I am afraid." Fear itself is not necessarily sin. What matters is where we run when fear comes. Do we run to our worries, or do we run to God?
How Fear Hinders Our Witness
Fear can prevent us from making an impact on the world around us. Fear keeps us silent when we should speak. Fear keeps us comfortable when God is calling us to step out in faith. Fear can keep churches inward-focused instead of mission-minded.
Timothy struggled with fear and discouragement. That is why Paul reminded him:
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7
The enemy loves fearful Christians because fearful Christians rarely take risks for the Kingdom. Fear tells us what might go wrong. Faith reminds us of who is in control.
Overcoming Fear
We do not overcome fear through positive thinking or self-confidence. We overcome fear by fixing our eyes on Christ.
- Remember God's Presence: I will never leave you nor forsake you. Hebrews 13:5
- Meditate on God's Sovereignty: Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. Psalm 115:3
- Pray Instead of Panic: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6
- Act in Faith Despite Fear: Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is obeying God while fear is present. Many of God's servants were afraid, but they moved forward because they trusted Him.
The question is not whether fear will knock on the door of your heart. It will. The question is whether fear or faith will answer the door.
The God who controls the stars, raises the dead, and governs every detail of history is the same God who holds your life in His hands. Because He is sovereign, we can move forward in faith, serve boldly, witness courageously, and trust completely.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
Father, we confess that fear often overwhelms us. We know You are sovereign, yet we sometimes focus more on our circumstances than on Your promises. Help us to trust You more deeply. Remind us that You are always present, always good, and always in control. Give us courage to obey You, speak for You, and live for Your glory. May our faith be stronger than our fears, so that we may make an impact for Christ in the world around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
