Pastor's Corner - 12/17

Advent joy is not rooted in perfect circumstances but in the faithfulness of God. When the angel appears to Mary, her life becomes uncertain almost immediately. Questions surround her future, her reputation, and her safety. Yet the gospel does not move Mary toward fear. It moves her toward joy. This joy is not produced by understanding everything God is doing, but from trusting the God who is in control of all things.
When Mary visits Elizabeth, Elizabeth’s child leaps in her womb for joy. Before Jesus is born, before He speaks or acts, His presence brings joy. This reminds us that joy does not wait for resolution. Joy arises when the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to recognize that the Lord is near. Often, joy comes before clarity, before answers, and before circumstances change.
Mary responds with a song that magnifies the Lord. Her joy is anchored in God’s character and covenant faithfulness. She rejoices in a God who lifts the humble, fills the hungry, and remembers His promises. Mary’s situation has not been made easier, but her heart is steady because God is faithful.
Dear Church, let’s take time to read Mary’s song slowly. Let her words shape your prayers. Rejoice not because life feels settled, but because Christ has come.
Merry Christmas!
