Pressing On Toward the Goal

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” Philippians 3:12 ESV

In Philippians 3:12-20, Paul gives a powerful picture of the Christian life, not as a destination reached, but as a journey of pursuit. Even the great apostle admits, “Not that I have already obtained this,” reminding us that spiritual maturity is not a one-time achievement but an ongoing process.

What motivates Paul to keep going? It’s not self-effort or personal ambition; it’s Christ. “I press on… because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” This is the core of Christian perseverance: we chase after Jesus because He first chased and claimed us.

Paul encourages believers to “forget what lies behind” (v.13) and to “strain forward to what lies ahead,” focusing on God's upward call. Our past failures or successes must not hold us back. Instead, we are called to live with faith directed forward, aiming toward the eternal prize.

Verses 18–19 deliver a sober warning: many live as “enemies of the cross,” with their minds fixated on earthly things. In contrast, our citizenship is in heaven (v.20), and we eagerly await a Savior who will one day transform us to be like Him.

Are you pressing on in your walk with Christ, or have you become complacent?
What are some things from your past that you need to leave behind?
Is your mindset more influenced by earthly desires or eternal hope?

Lord, thank You for making me Your own. Help me forget what lies behind and to press forward in faith, keeping my eyes on You. Guard my heart from distraction and give me a heavenward mindset as I await the day You make all things new. Amen.
