Courage, Gratitude, and God’s Presence

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (ESV)

As we pause between Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, two powerful themes rise to the surface: courage and gratitude.

On Veterans Day, we honor the men and women who have worn the uniform, standing ready to defend freedom and serve others. Their courage reflects the kind of strength God called Joshua to when he faced an uncertain future. Joshua was stepping into leadership after Moses, about to lead God’s people into the Promised Land, a place of both promise and battle. God’s command to him was not simply to be brave in his own strength, but to find courage in the unshakable presence of the Lord.

Likewise, our veterans have faced fear and hardship, yet many testify that their courage came from a deeper source from faith, from duty, from knowing that what they were fighting for was bigger than themselves. Their example reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear, but the resolve to move forward because God is with us wherever we go.

As we turn toward Thanksgiving, we’re invited to move from courage to gratitude, to thank God for His constant presence and for those who have served our nation with sacrifice and devotion. Gratitude grounds us. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we’ve been given, from fear to faith, from anxiety to trust.

So today, take a moment to thank a veteran for their service. But also, thank the Lord for His steadfast presence in your life, the same presence that gave Joshua strength, that sustained our soldiers in battle, and that walks with us still.
When you sit around the Thanksgiving table, remember that true courage and lasting gratitude both begin in the same place: in knowing that the Lord your God is with you, wherever you go.

Lord, thank You for being our constant source of courage and peace. Thank You for the men and women who have served our nation with bravery and sacrifice. Help us to walk in gratitude and strength, trusting Your presence in every season of life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
